Top 3 of 17 Hotels in Holguin

Hotel Villa Islazul Mirador de Mayabe

Hotel Villa Islazul Mirador de Mayabe

An unsung hotel about a 30-minutes drive from downtown Holgu?n, this is one of our favorite regional hotels. It combines many of the qualities you could hope for: great atmosphere, modern comforts, and killer views ? the latter courtesy the hotel's clifftop position overlooking the Mayabe valley. It's part of a faux-finca (farmstead) made famous by Panchito, the beer-swigging burro (donkey).

After looping up the mountain driveway, you arrive at an open-air lobby with him-and-her swing seats and fanciful contemporary wooden sculptures. To one side, an inviting swimming pool and sundeck are suspended at the very cliff edge. (Be warned that the place gets flooded with local families on weekends.) Behind, the thatched open-air restaurant adorned with country decor serves tremendous traditional meals, and folkloric performers entertain.

The 24 air-conditioned bungalows were totally refitted in 2002 for tourists. The modern bathrooms even got marble countertops!.

Cabanas Campismo Puerto Rico Libre

Cabanas Campismo Puerto Rico Libre

The Puerto Rico Libre cabanas and beach are on a beautiful remote corner of Holguin province between Cabo Lucrecia and Banes Bay.

It is an ideal place to enjoy nature, wilderness and romance, with its numerous hidden caves, the Jagueyes River and legends of pirates (such as Captain Esteban) and unlocated buried treasures.

The Campismo cabanas provide for a modest stay, and there are also wide areas along the seaside for camping. Modern tents for this purpose are available.

Hotel Gaviota Villa Cayo Naranjo

Hotel Gaviota Villa Cayo Naranjo

Providing an insight into the erstwhile privileged lifestyle of Cuba's government elite, this reclusive villa-hotel is on an island once reserved for their exclusive use as a hunting retreat. Yes, you'll do a double take! Those really are antelope and zebra wandering the scrubby island and formerly intended for the crosshairs of rifle scopes. Today the isle is a nature reserve and the lodge now caters to tourists. Still, it plays mightily on the hunting theme. Trophy heads stare down as you eat in the lounge and dining room. The chandliers are made of antlers. And ox-hide chairs play up the theme.

You can partake of Jeep safaris and guided hikes and horseback rides. For eats, take your pick of the air-conditioned main dining room or a rustic outdoor thatched beach grill. Yes, there are some lovely little beaches for sunning, and the snorkeling is excellent (bring your own gear).

Some rooms are in motel-style rows with terra-cotta floors; others are in rustic freestanding wooden cabins; still others are in lofty suites on stilts.
